Wigga and its alternate forms, whigga and wigger are all terms used for those suburban teens, that are currently in their hip hop phase and adopt ghetto lingo, dress like what they consider “hood fashion” (usually FUBU, Wu-Tang or other similar clothes brands, that are at least three times their size).
They have the little to none actual affiliation with Afro-American culture and are simply acting like they were part of the hood life.
“Wigga” is a slur for these people, so its use may result in conflict.
Rockstar Games presents us with a perfect example of a “wigga” in their 2013 game, Grand Theft Auto 5, in the form of Jimmy DeSanta, son of one of the main protagonist of the video game.
Origin of the term
The phenomenon of Caucasians being fascinated by and embracing black culture has been present in several countries in the Anglosphere since the abolition of slavery; earlier examples are white negro, used in the 20’s and 30’s in the jazz and swing scene and hipster in the decade of World War Two.
“Wigga” appeared soon after the rise of hip hop culture in the 80’s and 90’s.
Spread of the term
The term was then adopted in the whole of the United States by the 2000’s, and had appeared in various contexts, including hip hop songs, the prime example being Eminem’s The Way I Am.
Urban Dictionary defined the term in 2003 for the first time, and a plethora of other entries were written since that time.
