Origin of the term

The image called “tub girl” first appeared in the shock image/video sharing site rotten.com in late-2000 as a featured post, called “Feco Japanese I Really Think So.”

The real origin of the picture is unknown, and it might be for the better.

Spread of the term

Since its appearance, the image did not get much fame, but in 2002 the domain for tubgirl.com was registered, which has caused it to get some attention, but that has died down quickly.

In 2005 a post was submitted to Urban Dictionary for “tubgirl” where the original poster has described the image in every detail. In 2007 the gaming related website Kotaku.com has used the image on its front page as a prank, but later apologized because of it.

This has prompted many videos to be uploaded to the video sharing site YouTube the same year, featuring the dreaded picture as a prank on the viewers.
