The emote SourPls is based on a youtube video from 2007. where a man can be seen dancing in a store, which was later turned into a .gif (moving image), which was then used on image and message boards on the internet, most notably on sites like Reddit and 4chan.

The earliest known mention of the emote was in 2014. on the social media website Twitter, where it was shown, when the SourPls emote was used in chat, it would make it completely unreadable.
