What does Jewfro mean?

The Jewfro is a hairstyle somewhat similar to the African-American Afro, but worn by a Jew.

It’s curls are usually not as tight and rough as the ones of an African-American Afro, but rather consists of mild curls, waves and twirls.

Some choose to professionally style their “Jewfro”, but most prefer to let it grow all natural.

What's the origin of Jewfro?

The name “Jewfro” is a portmanteau of the words “Jew” and “Afro”.

It started protruding around the 60’s and 70’s in the US, around the same time as Afro.

Taking example from the African Americans  choosing to wear their tight curls in a natural style, young Jews decided to follow the trend and letting their “Jewfro” grow wild.

They wanted to embrace their culture and tradition, even if it meant going against that times’ societal expectations and norms.

How did Jewfro spread?

The “Jewfro” is used by public figures, entertainers and athletes to show appreciation for their culture, particularily because they are a minority in most countries.

It can be perceived as just as much of a political movement as cultural.

Some well known “Jewfro” wearers are musician Nick Jonas, and singer Art Garfunkel.
