The phrase has emerged as far back as 2014, with articles and blog posts commenting on the illusionary nature of social media, specifically Instagram, which became notorious for being a place, where people post staged photos, giving the impression their lives are straight out of a Hollywood movie.
The hashtag #instagramvsreality started gaining traction in 2015.
On November 28th, 2015, the Instagram page @celebface was launched, posting unflattering photos of models and actors.
Spread and Usage
The trend gained more and more traction over the years, with multiple pages dedicated to the theme on Instagram.
The concept of “Instagram vs. Reality” would also be explored in the subreddit r/Instagramreality, which was launched on November 1st, 2017.
