The term is shorthand for “get wrecked”, and while it’s exact origin is unclear, it seems to had spread out on the internet somewhere in the early 2010’s.
It was first defined on Urban Dictionary in 2011 as the message you send your mate when you are too drunk to type anything else.
Others has defined it as “smack talk” in gaming communities, and because of the short hand, it likely developed in a game where you don’t have much time on your hands to write full words, such as Starcraft or League of Legends.
Spread and Usage
The slang spread further to World of Warcraft forums, and in 2012, a thread named “Get Rekt Ally Scrublords” was created.
About a year later, Mount and Blade arranged a tournament named “North Americkan Dueling Tournament” shortened “REKT”.
Although we find these early instances of the slang term, Google Trends show that it wasn’t much searched for until 2014.
Around this time, “get rekt” started showing up on meme platforms such as 4chan.
