Origin
The term was coined by rap artist Keak da Sneak in 2003, when he released his soundtrack album with the title “Copium”.
It was first used recently on the /int/ board of 4chan, on March 30th, 2018.
A year later, a drawing of Pepe the Frog was uploaded to the /pol/ board in July 2019.
Spread and Usage
“Copium” started gaining traction as a meme in June 2020, as posts would emerge on sites like 9GAG, Reddit and Twitter.
The expression was first defined on Urban Dictionary in October 2020, with numerous other entries having been written since then.
It also spawned variations, such as “Copium” being written on a panel from the Hard to Swallow Pills meme on the cover of Willie J the Artist’s song “Copium”.
