What does Nig Nog mean?

The term, nig nog might appear as a racial slur, due to its resemblance of the infamous N-Word, but it is indeed originating from Northern England, and is used for a silly, stupid person.

Even though it has different origins, in America it is currently used and understood as yet another insult for Black people, so one must use caution with its use.

Origin of the term

Nig nog is said to derive from the cant slang expression; “nigmenog” which is said to mean “foolish person” in the 18th century.

In 19th century Australia, it occurred in the form of ning-nong.

It has first been associated with black people in America during the 1950’s as a shortened and reduplicated form of the notorious racial slur; nigger.

Spread of the term

The term had been further popularized in America thanks to Samuel L. Jackson’s movie; Formula 51, in 2001.

Urban Dictionary had added the phrase to its library of entries in 2004 and several other interpretations have been uploaded to the site since then.
