Origin
During a season 2 episode in Spongebob SquarePants, Patrick finds himself in a dispute with The Flying Dutchman.
The Dutchman learns that Patrick has gained possession of a sack that he needs as well. As a trade offer, he offers Patrick that he can grant 3 wishes in exchange for the sack. As a response, Patrick starts to negotiate with him, wanting 5 wishes in total.
Patrick’s character is portrayed in the series as a simple soul, so after a quick negotiation, he utters “three, take it or leave it” as his final offer, which, of course, surprises The Flying Dutchman., because that was his initial offer too.
Spread and Usage
The meme didn’t start to spread online until the year 2020.
On June 9, 2020, user bigBruhPotato posted a three, take it or leave it meme on the board r/BattleForDreamIsland. The meme then got reposted on r/MemeTemplatesOfficial, and from that point, the meme spread through various online platforms such as Facebook, 9GAG or iFunny.co.
