Origin
The exact origin of the phrase is not known, although it started emerging on Reddit, Tumblr and Imgur in late 2017.
While it initially started out in the comment section, toward the end of 2017, “thanks, I hate it” would be often encountered in the titles of posts on Reddit.
Spread and Usage
On December 29th, 2017, the subreddit r/thanksihateit was launched, with the aim of collecting all the disturbing images of the internet at one place.
The phrase became widely recognized, with the first Urban Dictionary entry added on the topic on August 10th, 2018.
