Origin
Team Fortress 2 has been a source for memes ever since its initial release in 2007.
Valve has uploaded Sniper’s introductory video on YouTube on January 19th, 2009.
In one of the scenes, the character drops the line “professionals have standards” after arriving to the topic of feelings.
Unlike many of the phrases in the game, this one needed almost ten years to be turned into an image macro.
Spread and Usage
The first image macro, featuring “professionals have standards” was posted on the subreddit r/tf2 by Reddit user mommaschunkymix on October 13th, 2018.
Variations of the meme started showing up in numerous other subreddits, including r/dankmemes and r/me_irl.
