Powercry refers to an emoji from the Cursed Emoji chart, specifically A2, depicting a paint-drawn Shy Emoji, with big eyes and uneven coloration, looking like it is ready to burst into tears.
Origin
The “powercry” emoji was first uploaded to Twitter by artist @OkayRoutt on November 28th, 2018, along with a drawn crying emoji.
On February 22nd, 2019, the same user posted a video of the two drawings, combined with autotuned sounds of a baby crying.
Spread and Usage
The “powercry” video went viral on Twitter, gaining a lot of views and spanning a lot of recreations of the original drawings.
The name of the emoji, “powercry” originates from Twitter user @PAMVILLO who referred to the meme as such on February 26th, 2019.
“Powercry” was featured on the Cursed Expression Meme chart in July, 2019, depicting a series of disturbing emojis.
Following the success of the Cursed Emojis, “powercry” as well as other expressions would be recreated on fan arts on sites like DeviantArt.
