What's the origin of No Shit, Sherlock?

The phrase is based on the fictional detective with out-of-this-world deductive forensic skills, Sherlock Holmes.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle released his book A Study in Scarlet in 1887, which was the first ever story to feature master detective Sherlock Holmes.

The phrase was developed as irony to the fictive character. Sherlock solves intricate crimes with his incredible deductive skills – while your friend, with their fantastic deductive skills, solved the mystery that ice turns to water when it melts.

“No shit, Sherlock” was first mentioned by media in the film Little Shop of Horrors in 1986, but is assumed to have been around since the 1940’s.

After numerous more stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, an own TV series (2010-2017) and several films, Sherlock finally made it to the internet as well.

In 2009, after the release of the movie with his name as title Sherlock Holmes, the subreddit r/NoShitSherlock was launched, specifically to gather people’s stupid, obvious statements.

Other popular social media platforms that significantly use the phrase are 4chan and Tumblr.

The phrase has also given rise to endless numbers of various memes.
