Origin
22 Jump Street premiered in the United States on June 4th, 2014.
In one of the scenes, Schmidt and Jenko (portrayed by Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum respectively) are performing a drug trade under cover, disguising themselves as Latinos.
When Jenko is confronted about being too silent, he exclaims in a falsetto voice “My name is Jeff”.
An early upload of the scene was shared on YouTube by LuLszic on March 14th, 2014.
Spread and Usage
Vines, containing the quote started emerging on the platform in November 2014, with an early example mixing the line from the film with Eminem’s song My Name Is, in a similar fashion to the Now This Looks Like a Job For me meme.
Vine compilations were also uploaded to YouTube in the following years, spreading the influence of the “My name is Jeff” trend even further.
The quote would also appear in music remixes and image macro memes as well, during the subsequent years.
