The meme itself is a variation of the original Welcome to the shadow realm, Jimbo photoshop edit.
It is a similar format to the We all make mistakes in the heat of passion, Jimbo meme, as both of them feature the trope of Hugh addressing his son as Jimbo.
Origin
The first Welcome to the shadow realm, Jimbo caption was featured with a Twitter upload by @sparkie237 on October 31st, 2017, depicting a photoshop edit of Hugh Neutron engulfed in shadows, with a Yu-Gi-Oh! deck in hand.
Despite the original tweet receiving a lot of likes and shares, the meme didn’t spread until two years later.
Spread and Usage
“Looks like you’re going to the shadow realm, Jimbo” edits would start appearing on Reddit in October, 2019, along with reposts of the original Welcome to the shadow realm, Jimbo format.
Over time, the image macro as well as the standalone phrase would spread to other sites, including Twitter and other meme sites, like me.me and iFunny.
