What's the origin of It’s Over 9000?

The quote originates from Season 1 Episode 21 of Dragon Ball Z, which first aired on April 19th, 1997, under the title The Return of Goku.

During the episode, Goku learns about the death of his friend, Piccolo during his battle against Vegeta, sending him into a rage.

His opponents then measure his Power Levels and realize “It’s over 9000”.

The original Japanese text, however, said “It’s over 8000”.

This difference exists only in the English, Croatian and Hindi translations.

How did It’s Over 9000 spread?

An early instance of the line along with the clip was uploaded to the /b/ board of 4chan by user Kajetokun in 2006.

Following this, the expression would gain more popularity on YTMND and 4chan’s boards, as well as appearing on YouTube.

The first isolated clip of the scene was uploaded to YouTube by user chowderrockz on June 24th, 2008.
