If it fits, I sits refers to image-macro memes that feature house pets (but mostly cats) sitting in weird postures or weird places.
The text on these image-macros are composed in lolspeak, which is a grammatically altered version of the English language.
Lolspeak’s birthplace originally was 4chan in around 2005, but the phrase was created as an altered version of the popular US saying “If it fits, it ships.”
The first acknowledged appearance of If it fits, I sits was on the site ICanHasCheezburger in 2011.
As mentioned before, this type of meme was enjoying great popularity at the time, so the format was spreading across the boards of 4chan at the second half of the 2000s.
In 2011 a version of If it fits, I sits was submitted on /r/funny and then became popular on Reddit after. The format was often used to relate to “cat logic”.
Later the meme was also strongly present on Facebook and Tumblr.
