An early instance of the expression occurred on Reddit on January 26th, 2016, when a Reddit user uploaded an image macro to the r/justneckbeardthings subreddit.
The image depicted a man, bowing his head while unsheathing a katana, paired with a lengthy caption:
“When you were partying, I studied the blade. When you were having premarital sex, I mastered the blockchain. While you wasted your days at the gym in pursuit of vanity, I cultivated inner strength. And now that the world is on fire and the barbarians are at the gate you have the audacity to come to me for help.”
Spread and Usage
The format would become popular on Facebook, where “I studied the blade” became a popular choice of words for those wishing to pose with brandished cutlasses.
Screenshots of these Facebook posts would then become viral posts on the r/justneckbeardthings subreddit, as well as Tumblr and Instagram.
