What's the origin of I don’t need it?

The scene originates from Episode 1c of SpongeBob SquarePants, which was first aired on May 1st, 1999, with the title Tea at the Treedome.

The titular hero is featured in the episode, trying to court Sandy, a squirrel.

While SpongeBob is visiting Sandy’s Treedome, he is slowly drying out, and trying to resist drinking the water from a wase of flowers.

As he is telling himself “I don’t need it” he suddenly exclaims “I need it”.

A clip of the scene was uploaded to YouTube by user Kurisu-pyon on October 23rd, 2012.

Spread and Usage


How did I don’t need it spread?

A Facebook page, named “I don’t need it…I don’t need it…I NEED IT!” was launched on February 24th, 2010.

By 2012, a dubstep remix featuring the quote was uploaded to SoundCloud by Toon$tep.

“I don’t need it” would first appear on Reddit in 2014 and it would rapidly gain great popularity online, with the meme appearing in YouTube parodies, as well as image macros on sites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Reddit.
