Origin
Various iterations and variations of the “Hol Up” meme have been circulating online since 2013, with a popular version, depicting the Vault Boy from the Fallout series gaining traction in 2017.
The r/HolUp subreddit launched on October 29th, 2018, attracting many memes in the theme, however, image macros also appeared on other subs, including r/MemeEconomy and r/Memes.
Spread and Usage
The popularity of “Hol Up” image macros, depicting a character from Fat Albert, similar to the Wayment meme started rising in 2018, using Bucky and Mushmouth from the children’s animated series as the face of the image macro, with a racial undertone.
I the following years, “Hol Up” appeared on countless websites, ranging from Reddit, Twitter and Instagram to 9GAG.
