What's the origin of Don’t Do That Don’t Give Me Hope?

In 2019, Avengers: Endgame was released. In the previous sequence (Infinity War) Hawkeye (played by Jeremy Renner) loses his family to the movie’s antagonist character, Thanos.

During Endgame, Hawkeye is approached by his ally Black Widow.

She proceeds to tell him that there might be a way to bring his family back to life. Hawkeye is rushed with emotions, as he utters the following sentences:

“Don’t do that. Don’t give me hope.”

The first image macro surfaced on Facebook page Avengers Shieldposting, with the caption saying “when your crush reacts with a heart on your pic”.

The video became viral after YouTube user named DandyGuy uploaded the original footage with Zack Hemsey’s song titled “Mind Heist” cut under it.

The music gave the clip such dramatic, thrilling tone, that it gained more than 13 million views over the years.

In 2018 the r/Cringe community labeled the original video as “cringe material”.
