What does Letmegooglethatforyou mean?

The phrase Letmegooglethatforyou or its abbreviated version, LMGTFY are used in situations, when someone turns to others on the internet about a question, which is easily answered by a mere Google search.

Despite the friendly impression we may get at first glance, the expression is used in a patronizing tone, as a slight hint, that the person posing the question is in fact wasting the precious time of other internet users.

Origin of the term

The life of the phrase began after the spreading of Google, in the mid 2000’s, when some people still didn’t have the capacity to type a question into a search bar, so people started to use the expression in message boards and forums.

In 2008, the expression got its own sarcastic site, namely lmgtfy.com, where people finally could find out the process of looking for answers on their own.

Spread of the term

The website contributed massively to the popularity of the expression, which is said to have reached its peak of popularity in 2011, still being used up to this date on various message boards and forums, such as Reddit.

The phrase is part of Urban Dictionary since 2009, with several others explaining the abbreviated version as well as the phrase itself.
