Origin of the term

The term originates from the internet’s first shock websites, which usually had innocent sounding titles so they would trick people into watching bizarre, graphic and pornographic images.

There was a so called Unholy Trinity on the Internet back then, which included Goatse, Tub girl and “Lemon Party”, registered as www.lemonparty.org in 2002.

People were pranking each other by telling one another to just type “Lemon Party” only to find three old men having sex, while listening to Jimmy Souls’s “If You Wanna Be Happy” song.

Spread of the term

In 2004, Urban Dictionary officially posted an entry about the term. After that, in 2007, Michael Cera and Jonah Hill, while promoting their movie Superbad, plugged the term “Lemon Party”

Mainstream media and pop culture since then had referenced “Lemon Party” multiple times, including in the tv show The Simpsons,30 Rock, American Dad, and The Daily Show as well.

Some people had problems with the term, when it not only referred to the website, and the pranks, but it stigmatized elderly people and/or gay people having sex.

In 2014, Dixon Cox wrote an erotic novel titled My First Lemon Party. And in 2018, you could buy a piece of the internet’s history, when the “Lemon Party” went up for sale for $450,000.
