What does Jigaboo mean?

Jigaboo is a disparaging, offensive slang that refers to a black person.

It has a similar meaning as slave, but even more negatively loaded.

This derogatory slang has no other purpose than to degrade and insult a person of African origin, and is highly unacceptable.

It is mainly used by racist white people and Neo-Nazis.

Origin of the term

The racial slur is derived from a Bantu word that means servile or meek, referring to a slave.

Bantu is a language spoken by several hundred indigenous groups in Africa, but native English speaking people took the word and used it against the black population.

The term has been defined in Collins English Dictionary since 1991.

Spread of the term

The racist slang is used mainly in the US or the UK, but fortunately as the activism against racism increases, the usage of Jigaboo and other racial slurs decrease.

Some black musicians has attempted to take back the term, giving themselves the stage name Jigaboo, Lil Jigaboo, or similar, but the term is still offensive.
