F in the chat
Write F in the chat to pay respect is mainly used jokingly in video games when a character dies.
If something sad happens, for example you die in the video game or you kill a chicken in Counter Strike, someone can say Write F in the chat to pay respect.
In some cases the phrase is used if one of the players in a multiplayer game tells something sad that happened to them, for example, their girlfriend left them.
Origin of the term
F in the chat originates from a 2014 COD release, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
Call of Duty (COD) is a first person shooter game that can be played in multiplayer mode.
A new feature in the game asked players to press F on their keyboard or X on their control to pay respects to fallen virtual soldiers.
Spread of the term
After the COD release and the phrase’s rapid spread to other games, it created a basis for new meme material in the gaming society.
Many F in the chat memes are seen on social platforms like Twitter, Reddit, 9GAG and similar.
The phrase is commonly seen on Twitch, a live streaming webpage often used by gamers. Viewers will comment the phrase if their streamer dies in the game.
