What does Cibophobia mean?

Cibophobia is a disorder, that consists of feeling loathing, aversion or fear toward food items.

The subject of “cibophobia” is feeling negative emotions in relation to consuming or straight up seeing food.

A synonym for the disorder is sitophobia, which consists of a fear of eating, due to anticipated symptoms that could arise, including nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain.

Origin of the term

The terminology of this aversion was born out of a Latin and a Greek component; cibo, which is Latin for food and –phobia, which is Greek for fear or agitation about some subject.

“Cibophilia” had been long recorded in history and it is not a newly emerged disorder or disease, that is tormenting only our generations.

The disorder may serve as the first stepping stone toward other food-related difficulties, including anorexia or bulimia.

Spread of the term

Nowadays, eating disorders are more prevalent than ever and the cause is a matter of debate, although there are several factors to be taken into account, including the cultural standards in terms of beauty or the operations of the food industry.

The term was first defined on Urban Dictionary in 2016.
