The meaning of LMFAO is “laughing my fucking ass off”.
It is essentially identical to the slightly more widespread abbreviation “Lmao” with a tiny pinch of profanity added to the mixture.
Origin of the term
To discuss the origin of “lmfao”, we must first examine the roots of its predecessor; the expression “laughing my ass off”.
One of the earliest instances of the longer version of “lmao” appeared in 1951, with the publication of J. D. Salinger’s iconic novel, The Catcher in the Rye.
During the early days of the internet, the phrase got shortened to its abbreviated form and not long after, in the 90’s, the profane version was also created.
SMS technology had only contributed to the further growth of “lmfao”.
Spread of the term
The widespread use of the internet helped massively to further the advancement of the expression.
“Lmfao” was first defined on Urban Dictionary in 2003, marking its entry to the unofficial dictionary of the internet.
In 2006, the abbreviation was taken up as a band name, by the duo consisting of Redfoo and SkyBlu.
In the later years LMFAO was responsible for releases such as Party Rock Anthem and Sexy and I Know It.
